The words of the trade

- AI Act
- The EU regulation on artificial intelligence, Regulation (EU) 2024/1689. For publishers, the article that matters most is Article 50, on disclosing AI-generated content.Read the guide
- Attribution
- Saying where a fact came from. In Mediastilo every claim in a draft is tied to the source it came from.Facts with sources
- Byline
- The line naming who wrote a story. It is also a signal of editorial responsibility: someone answers for what was published.
- CMS
- Content management system: the software your site runs on, such as WordPress or Ghost.Integrations
- Deep fake
- AI-generated or manipulated image, audio or video that resembles real people, places or events and could pass as real. The AI Act requires it to be disclosed, with no editorial exception.
- Editorial responsibility
- A person or organisation answering for what is published. Under the AI Act it is one of the two conditions under which AI-assisted text needs no label.
- Embargo
- A request not to publish a release before a set time. Honour it by scheduling the story for that time.
- Evergreen
- A story that stays useful long after it is published, such as a guide to a local tax or permit.
- Feed (RSS)
- A machine-readable list of a site’s latest items. Many official sites publish one; where they do not, pages can be read directly.Monitoring
- Hallucination
- When an AI model states something that is not in its sources, or not true. Drafting from sources, with every claim linked, is the defence.
- House style
- How a publication writes: tone, length, structure, spelling, who it quotes. Mediastilo learns it from what you publish.Brand voice
- Human review
- A person checking content before it is published. Under Article 50(4) of the AI Act, review or editorial control is one of the conditions under which AI-assisted text needs no label.Editorial control
- Lede
- The opening sentence or paragraph of a news story, carrying the most important fact.
- Press release
- An official announcement from an organisation. A common starting point for local news, and one many desks rewrite every day.
- Public interest
- Matters the public has a stake in knowing about. The AI Act’s text disclosure duty covers text published to inform the public on such matters.
- Scaled content abuse
- Google’s name for pages mass-produced mainly to rank in search, whatever tool made them. It is treated as spam.
- Sentiment
- Whether coverage of a topic, person or organisation sounds positive, neutral or negative.Analytics
- Spike
- A topic rising well above its usual level of coverage in a short time. Often the first sign of a story.Story ideas
- Verbatim
- Word for word. A source marked as verbatim in Mediastilo is published as it is, one article to one draft.
- Webhook
- A message one system sends to another at an address you choose, when something happens. Used to publish to sites that are not WordPress or Ghost.Webhook
